Today I would like you to think about vocabulary. listen out for the words below in this chapter. Then discuss, or think about, how familiar you are with each of them. 

  • If there are any you KNOW the meaning of, try to use that word in a conversation this week.
  • If you are familiar with (you have heard it, but are not sure of its meaning) any, read the sentence and guess the meaning. Then check by discussing it with an adult or looking it up. Try to use one of these word in your writing this week. 
  • If there are any you are unfamiliar with (you have never heard before), read the sentence and guess the meaning. Then check by discussing it with an adult or looking it up.

 

Chided - "Oh leave her be. She's worried about her grandad," Mum chided.

Coax - I knew full well how hard it was to coax my parents out of their chairs once they had settled down.

Crammed - The shelves on every wall were crammed with books, plates, carvings and more boxes.

Intrigued - But, I was intrigued to hear what he had to say.

Instincts - You will know how hard it is for me to admit to being wrong, but I must tell you, your instincts regarding the Egyptyian canopic jar were right all along: it does, I fear, carry a terrible curse.

Decipher - The writing was hard to decipher.
