Homework

Homework

Homework is obviously the best way for you to support your child at school. Reading with them regularly (at least three times per week), talking to them about their reading and helping them with their spellings and times tables are essential.

Reading

Children need to read at home with an adult at least three times a week. This reading should be recorded in their reading diaries and signed by an adult. In addition, they should be encouraged to read independently as much as possible. When reading with them it is helpful to ask them questions on what they have read to check their understanding and develop their inference and deduction skills. We appreciate your support with helping your child with this crucial skill. Reading books and diaries will need to be in school every day. Children have also been allocated a large number of books on their ActiveLearn account via ‘Bug Club’. Reading diaries will be checked on a Friday and a reward given to the children that have read at home at least 3 times during the week.

Math

The majority of homework will be set using mymaths.co.uk. It will be set every week online on a Friday and this needs to be completed by the following Friday. On occasion, paper-based homework may be set. If Internet access is a problem then please speak to your child’s teacher so we can make other arrangements.

Spellings

Spellings will be set on a Friday and the children will be tested the following Friday at which point they need to bring in their completed work. Children are expected to practise these at home. This can be done by way of a test, or using ‘Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check’. Sheets will be given out and spellings will be copied into their reading records every Monday. Spelling work should be completed with joined and fluent writing and sentences should be completed to the best of the pupils’ ability.

Please see resources section for the Statutory Spelling words for year 5 and 6

Topic

At the beginning of every half-term, children will receive a number of activities to complete(Chilli Challenges). They may choose 1 activity per week from the menu provided. This homework will be based on our current topics as well as supporting all of our English-based objectives.

All homework activities will be monitored every week and the children will need to catch up on any homework that is missed.

Reading resources

- Children can read their own books independently and log their reading using the reading log attached, which encourages them to monitor and reflect on what they read.

- Or they could read Bug Club books independently as this gives interactive questions as they read.

- Or if they are reading with an adult there are some question ideas attached to encourage discussion and reflection on their reading.

- Test out your reading skills by completing one of the reading comprehension challenges in our weekly English resources.
