WALT use column method to multiply.

Today we are going to use the column method They are going to use the knowledge of repeated addition to represent a 2-digit number multiplied by a 1-digit number.  They will use the formal method of column multiplication.  They will need to apply their understanding of partitioning to represent and solve the calculations.  They are going to represent their calculations using concrete representations (diagrams).  21x3=  as a diagram:

When using the column method, children need to always multiply the number in the ones column first.  They need to also remember that one number per square (Makes it easier to set out and follow).

They must ensure they write the answer under the correct column.  (If they wrote the 6 under the 3 then their answers would be 9

Try and represent the following calculations using both the picture (bars and dots) and the column method.

23 x 3 =

32 x 3 =

42 x 2 =
